3 Approaches to Online Success

3 Approaches to Online Success

Online success – we all want it, but out of those who try only a small percentage actually attain it.

What can YOU do to be in that small percentage?

online successHey guys,

I’m going to get right down to business here.

Success. You want to be successful in whatever it is you’re doing, right? Yet, it’s said that 97% of people who try to make money online fail.

Why is this?

Well, there could be many reasons for failure but I’m going to cover two possible reasons. Then, I’ll talk about one thing that you absolutely must do if you want to succeed.

Sound good?

I said, “SOUND GOOD?

Okay, just making sure that you’re awake and on board with this! I want YOU to be among the 3% who actually succeed.

Right, let’s do this….

online successAnalysis Paralysis

Analysis paralysis is one of the most common traps that aspiring Internet Marketers fall into. I should know, I was one of them! Even now I sometimes find myself slipping back into this trend.

Just what is analysis paralysis?

Simply put, it’s when you over analyse something. You immerse yourself in researching, brainstorming, tweaking and get so bogged down in details that you never actually do anything to progress. Hence, you find yourself rooted to the spot – paralysed – because you are so obsessed with the fine details that you just can’t move forward.

Now, it’s important to emphasise that there is absolutely nothing wrong with researching, brainstorming and tweaking. In fact I’d encourage you to do all those things! But it’s when that’s ALL a person does that it becomes a problem – all thinking and no action.

online successSo this is one of the major reasons why many people fail when trying to make money online. They just spend far too much time on the theory without taking action with the practical.

“But supposing I mess things up?”

So what? That’s part of the learning process. Use it, leverage it and move forwards.

Again, there has to be a balance, though. I’m not suggesting wanton recklessness, especially when it comes to investing your money. You don’t want to just take any and all action and find yourself in a bind as a result. You should always do your due diligence, be discerning and be careful.

But don’t fall into the trap of over analysing and second guessing everything, resulting in you not moving forwards. It just isn’t necessary.

So analysis paralysis is one possible reason why a person is not achieving success.

What Can a Trampoline and a Pogo Stick Teach You About Internet Marketing?

Okay, last time I asked a question: are you a pogo stick Marketer or a trampoline Marketer?

It’s while considering these two types of Marketer that we will discover the remaining two approaches – one further possible reason for failure and one important component for success.

So, to begin with, let’s think about what you do with a trampoline and a pogo stick.

You bounce up and down on both of them.

They’re both fun (or, at least they should be!)

A trampoline remains static. You just stay in the same place, bouncing up and down.

A pogo stick can move around, so you can head in whatever direction you wish.

So which are you – a trampoline Marketer or a pogo stick Marketer? Go on, have a guess – which do you think is the more desirable?

I’ll wait while you have a think…..

Tick….

Tock…..

Tick….

Tock….

Ding!

Okay, have you picked one?

Right, I shall now tell you which one you should be….

online successA trampoline Marketer.

Why is this? I actually wonder just how many of you thought “pogo stick Marketer” because of not being stuck in the same place and being able to constantly hop forwards. If you used this reasoning then well done, as you are completely right – you do want to be constantly moving forwards and don’t want to get stuck in the same place.

However, in the context we’re going to consider, you should want to be a trampoline Marketer. Here’s why:

online success
Just as a matter of interest – do you realise just how difficult it is to find a royalty free, CC0 image of a pogo stick!? Flipping difficult, I tell ya!

If you bounce around on a pogo stick you can’t get very high. Sure, there are professional athletes who do amazing things on pogo sticks, but for the rest of us we’re pretty much just going to hop around at a fairly conservative level.

After a while of jumping around it can becoming very tiring and eventually your balance can even be affected.

The difference with a trampoline is that you are constantly trying to get higher. You can do so in a variety of ways, not restricted to holding on to something like you are with a pogo stick. You can flip, somersault, do star jumps and whatever else takes your fancy, letting the trampoline do a large amount of the work

So, now to apply this to Internet marketing.

There are those who do have momentum, take action and keep moving. But they are constantly hopping from one thing to another, never staying put and focusing on one thing at a time. Sure, it can be fun, but it eventually they can become tired and they can even start to lose their balance somewhat.

This can be another possible reason for failure.

The trampoline Marketer, however, remains in the same place, focused on the one thing. These type of Marketers, just like the pogo stick Marketers, are constantly on the go, but they are determined to try to keep getting higher where they are rather than jumping from one thing to another.

As they get used to what they’re doing they’ll try out new ways of getting higher, still remaining within their focus area.

It’s this approach that is important for success.

The Approach That Yields Success

Forget about jumping from course to course, strategy to strategy, WSO to WSO.

Take one thing, stick with it, become totally familiar with it and perfect it. Only then should you think about changing your ‘bounce’. After all, you wouldn’t go on a trampoline for the very first time and immediately attempt a somersault, would you? Well, maybe you would, but it might not be advisable…

No, you would likely concentrate on getting used to just jumping first and perfecting this before trying anything more adventurous.

How many projects are you working on right now? The easy answer would be: “One”. At least that’s what it should be.

Again, focus on the one thing and perfect it before moving on to something else, otherwise you risk getting distracted, tired and frustrated. All too often the person who takes on multiple things at once ends up not giving any of them the attention they should or even abandoning some or all of them completely.

How many things are you trying to learn? E-mail marketing? SEO? WordPress? Again, the answer really should be: “One”.

Look, you’re still going to have to work through the same number of subjects and the same amount of information. Why complicate things and make them harder than they need be? Just take one thing at a time, focus on that, become familiar with it, perfect it and then move on to the next when you are ready.

online successThis actually relates to my magic number that you may have heard me mention before: 141. This is the ‘One for One Principle‘ – i.e. one solution for one problem.

Let’s say, for example, that you want to know about how to monetise a blog. If you’ve never had a blog before then forget about monetising it, at least for the moment! Rather, learn how to create your blog first.

What will you write about? It doesn’t matter – get your blog built first.

How will you get traffic to your blog? It doesn’t matter – get your blog built first!

Are you sensing a pattern here?

141 – one solution for one problem.

There’s absolutely no point in spending time trying to learn how to monetise a blog and get traffic, etc if you haven’t yet even learned how to build a blog in the first place! So it’s THAT that should be your first port of call. ONE solution for ONE problem.

Once you have learned how to build your blog, then you can move on to another aspect.

Supposing you’ve done some market research and you’ve found that there is a market for A, B, C and D in your niche. “Great!” you think, “I can create products in all of those categories.”

That’s fine. Go ahead and create your products in each of those categories. However, do ONE at a time.

Once you have focused on and created A, then move onto B and so on.

Look guys, making money online can be difficult enough to begin with without making things even harder for ourselves. I’ve done the jumping around and making things complicated strategy – it doesn’t work.

Sure, you can have some positive results and you can make some progress. But it’s more like having a misfiring engine that, although works in a fashion, it keeps spluttering, holding you back and causing you headaches.

Wouldn’t it be much better to have a well-maintained engine that runs nice and smoothly? This will make your journey much more pleasant.

online successSo, my friends, climb on your trampoline, stay focused on the one area and strive to get higher. It’s this that will help you to get results, rather than allowing your attention to be taken all over the place by jumping from one thing to the next.

I hope you enjoyed this blog post. More importantly, I hope you apply it to whatever you’re doing. Here’s the thing: I WANT you to succeed! There are so many people trying to make money online but failing, as I mentioned earlier. Add to the that the huge amount of unhelpful twaddle that gets banded about, disguised as the next “game changer” or “push-button solution” and it makes the whole thing a real minefield.

If you’re a regular visitor or subscriber you’ll know I’m all about transparency. I don’t claim to know it all and I don’t claim to have found any kind of ‘magic’ solution.

I don’t claim to be making millions of dollars. Heck, I don’t claim to be consistently making thousands! But I have been trying to make it online for years with a success rate of big, fat ZERO. However, since cracking a few basic principles I’ve reached a few milestones:

Yes, I now have experience of what works, at least in part. Of course I’m always learning and I’m still growing, but this growth is based on a foundation that I’ve been able to establish and build upon.

If you aren’t yet where you’d like to be then I invite you to fill in one of the forms on my page here, either the one below or the one in the sidebar to the right. As a subscriber you’ll get access to my free e-book which outlines just how I got started and the steps I took to get to my first $1000 day online.

You will also get a free, seven-part course sent to you via e-mail that takes some of those steps and examines them in greater detail, giving you some valuable insights as to the strategies that I not only used to get going but am using right now.

Also, I’ll be up front and tell you that when you opt in you will be taken to a download page where you will be able to get my e-book. On that page you’ll be presented with a short video that highlights something very special – something that is directly responsible for my life-changing turnaround. This is something that I highly recommend and endorse and it’s something that has already led to many, many people achieving their first successes online too.

So don’t delay – sign up and get access to all that great stuff. 🙂

  1. Hi Glenn,

Loved your post and you described me to the T, Analysis paralysis that’s me. I have that disease.

My New Years resolution is to spend most of my time working on my blog. All of a sudden I’m getting a lot of responses there, so many I can’t keep up with them. My Blog is keeping me very busy. Thanks for the tweet!

I chose the trampoline because when I was little I did gymnastics and I loved the trampoline, I even did one and a halves, that’s one and a half somersaults.

I’m starting to jump around again and your post stopped me dead in my tracks. It’s time to put my New Years resolution into action and that is back to working on my blog. As you know it needs a lot of work.

I always love your posts, they hit the nail on the head.

Best Regards and to Our Success you have a wonderful weekend!

    1. Hi Linda,

Get off that pogo stick and back onto the trampoline! I do know how difficult it is, I really have to be strict with myself regarding this. But I’m definitely getting better and I’m trying to keep my focus laser-targeted right now.

A good thing to keep in mind is something that I picked up from Alex Jeffreys and also from Lee McIntyre. I’ve actually mentioned this a few times on other people’s blogs over the last couple of days – when you’re deciding what to do during the day, ask yourself: “Will this directly result in the growing of my business?” If the answer is “No” then put it to one side and concentrate first and foremost on the things that WILL. Afterwards, if there’s time, you can go back to the less-important things.

To give an example: You might have three things to do in a day, 1) find a better theme for your site, 2) go about purchasing a solo ad and 3) do some social media marketing. Which one should be in first place? Well, although 2 and 3 can both directly result in the growth of your business, I would say 2 first, then 3, mainly because, as we all know, as soon as we get on social media then it can so easily become a distraction and we end up wasting our time away. With regards to finding a new theme, of course we want our site to look and perform well, but will this DIRECTLY relate to the growth of our business? Well, no. The site works as it is, even if not optimally. But at least it’s working. So this is something of lesser importance.

That’s just a very basic example off the top of my head but I hope you get the sense of it. We all need to maintain that all-important focus on what’s really important. After we’ve addressed the important stuff, then we can move on to the rest.

I’m glad you enjoyed this post and found it helpful. I’m aiming to get my next one out this evening, I’m just finishing up some work on one of the videos for my forthcoming video course. By the way, I seem to recall you commenting that you can’t wait to buy it, but remember – it’s totally free! 😉 Plus, you’ll automatically get access as you’re on my list.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting, Linda. I hope you, too, have a great weekend.

  2. Hi Glenn, really like this post as I can relate to this sooo much!

I’ve suffered from analysis paralysis for years. I really had to force myself not to get bogged down with all the detail, when creating my first blog recently. Just focused on getting it out there, rather than trying to make it look pretty, I can worry about that later!

I really like your trampoline and pogo stick analogy too. I wish I had got on that trampoline years ago, rather than constantly using the pogo stick, Well, I’m on that trampoline now and hopefully, I’ll stay on it!

    Thanks for sharing.

    1. Hi Vinay,

      Welcome to my blog! 🙂

That’s awesome, my friend – just taking action and getting it going is definitely the way to go. I’ve just had a quick look and I like how it looks so far. Sure, there are things that you will need to address, but that will come with time and you can tweak things as you go.

It’s fantastic to see you on the ‘trampoline’! Stay on it, get used to jumping, keep aiming higher and you’ll find yourself on your way to new heights! 😉

Thanks for stopping by and commenting. I look forward to working along with you on your journey to success!

  3. Hi Glenn.

This great post came at the right time for me. I’ve been doing the solo ad way to bring traffic to the iPro sales funnel for about a month now with only 5 total sales so far. Due to limited funding, I have decided to start focusing on bringing traffic to my blog by blog-hopping. I think I can give some value to others with what I’ve learned already. That’s where my trampoline will be sitting until I really learn to do it effectively. I checked out a couple of your older posts and plan on reading more of what you have said in the past.

    Have a good one………Chris

    1. Hi Chris,

Awesome, dude! I’m glad it helped.

The solo ad strategy is fine so long as you have a large enough kitty to draw from. If your funds are somewhat limited then I would strongly advise focusing on other strategies.

You can definitely give value to others, my friend. But try not to pigeon hole yourself too much by only writing based on what you’ve learned so far. Just be yourself and write about whatever you feel will be of interest and benefit to your visitors. Of course keep it relevant, though.

I think that focusing on your blog could be the way to go. Although I have dabbled with solo ads, the result that have come from my blog HUGELY outweigh those I’ve had from solo ads. So it’s a strategy that I know works. It’s how Dean started and look where he is now!

I hope you enjoy looking through my other posts. You’ll probably find it interesting to see how I’ve developed considerably since those early posts at the beginning! But it’s all a learning curve and I’m still learning!

One thing I suggest is that you go to my “About Me” page. I’ve listed a few posts in there that I think you may find particularly interesting and helpful. 🙂

  4. Great article. It is sometimes a fine line where you are doing the same thing over and over again and not getting results and jumping to a new strategy. On one hand, you don’t want to give up so easily. On the other hand you feel the insanity creeping up for expecting different results. This was so frustrating for me in the past. That is why I like your analysis paralysis segway because you will eventually learn what needs to be tweaked by just taking massive action. Thanks for the post.

    1. Hi Craig,

Good to see you here, thanks for stopping by.

That’s so true about it being a fine line between spending a lot of time doing the same thing and not giving up so easily. I think the crucial factor there is to have a clear idea of what you’re doing, why you’re doing it and what you want to achieve in the long term.

As I mentioned in my post, there is a lot of rubbish out there in the Internet marketing arena. However, there is a lot of good information too and what I’ve come to appreciate over time is that the fault for lack of success is often not that of the product or coach, but rather that of the student.

At the end of the day there are many proven strategies, yet an individual may try one, not get those quick, big results they desire and dismiss it as not working. Well, the strategy clearly works, as many people can prove. So the question is, why is it not working for this person?

What I’ve observed time and time and time again is that many people want those big results and quick. When it doesn’t happen for them they hop off to something else that they hope will work better for them. For they don’t appreciate, though, is that if they’d have simply stuck with the one method, they would likely have started to get results which then could have then leveraged, built upon and started snowballing.

One big problem is that so many Marketers know that there are people like this out there so they target them with unrealistic promises. But once the individual starts to think realistically, approach making money online as a business and dedicate themselves to mastering a proven strategy, then they will begin to see results.

Thanks so much for your great comment, Craig, thanks so much. 🙂

  5. The pogo stick analogy is telling Glenn, I like it.

If we rise higher and higher we are moving up in circles and are also moving into different stratospheres.

For me, working on my mindset was the difference maker. I started to focus less on making money and more on doing things which would free me and free my audience and these freeing things involved me doing stuff that I loved.

Example; I began to write in-depth, more entertaining, enjoyable to write blog posts after spending more and more time in diligent personal development. The inner world changed so my outer world changed.

I dig your tips because each hinges on sticking with the fundamentals. Stick with the basics, build your blog from the ground up and don’t be in a rush to manifest any outcome.

Fall in love with the process of building your blog until you stop trying so hard to get anything.

Enjoy your writing – pick a fun niche for you – enjoy connecting with niche pros and you’ll keep bounding higher and higher on the trampoline.

    1. Hey Ryan,

All good tips there, buddy. Getting that all-important inner world in check is essential. As I’m sure you’ve heard me mention before, I think that establishing the right mindset as to results of any kind is of key importance. If we focus on things other than money, etc primarily, we’ll find that those things largely take care of themselves.

Your blog posts are certainly entertaining, but also always so jam-packed with valuable content that your readers can take away and apply. It;s clear to see that your shift in focus worked out.

Thanks for your visit and comment as always. It’s always a pleasure to hear from you. 🙂

  6. Glenn,

Another classic post and one that so many of us probably need to bookmark for future reference. In this fast paced internet marketing world, it doesn’t take very much to get an individual distracted for sure.

I feel exactly where you come from with the multiple project syndrome and bouncing from thing to thing. I raise my hand in admitting that I’ve been guilty of doing that at some point for sure. I believe it boils down to vision and passion. Just knowing more about yourself and how “you” fit into the business that you choose.

That’s one of the reasons why I lean more toward the video/educational aspect simply because I feel more at ease there and I believe that I can help more people with that platform. But, it’s not just the platform, but what you can actually give to those who need your assistance. Just looking back and I can see that we’ve all grown a tremendous amount collectively and have done so with many ups and downs.

The bottom line is that you’re still in the game and maturing as an internet marketer every single day. Keep it moving bro.

    1. Hey Jerry,

I hear ya bro. Sometimes you don’t even realise that a particular thing isn’t quite the best fit for you until you actually stick with it. After doing so you’re in a much better position to know where you’re more at ease, like you mentioned with regards to the video/educational aspect. I think you do really well with that and I can only see you going from strength to strength as you go.

Yes indeed, there has been much growth over the last couple of years or so especially. I have a feeling that 2015 will see a few growth spurts! 😉

      Thanks bud,
