Consistency is Key & the Golden Rule

consistencyConsistency is Key

Hi everyone!

Just to begin with, I’d like to explain why I chose the picture to the right here. Bearing in mind “Consistency is Key” I was looking for a picture of a key. Inspired, huh? 😉 But instead, one of the first pictures I came across was this one of a red “Help” key on a computer keyboard. For some reason, this stood out to me and the more I thought about it the more I decided that yes, it would be an appropriate picture to use. How come? Let’s get into the subject and find out…

Since I got started properly with this whole Internet marketing thing I have become a big fan of consistency. Yes, consistency is, indeed, key. If you’ve read any of my previous blog posts then you’ll likely have noticed that I’ve spoken about what I’ve noticed when my consistency has dropped. Just to reiterate: whenever I’ve slackened off, whether it be through my own doing or circumstances beyond my control, I’ve noticed that this has been reflected directly in my results. So having gone from setting aside a set time for regular forum and blog commenting to only doing it a bit here and there, I’ve noticed that my traffic results have been directly affected, from steadily climbing to doing a total about-turn and steadily declining until they’ve reached single figures again.

Over the last couple of days I’ve tried to pick up the pace again and resume my dedicated commenting approach. And, guess what? My traffic is steadily climbing again. In fact, yesterday it jumped right up to the previous peak amount! And what about those Slovenians? Well, I’ve checked alexa.com, literally just this minute, and it now seems that Slovenia isn’t the country where my site is most popular anymore, now it’s the U.S. I wonder who it will be next week?

So, back to our picture. When you were starting out, or if you’re starting out at the moment, how many times did you reach for the figurative “Help” key? Usually it’s when the results aren’t coming in as we’d like, we’re not sure if what we’re doing is working, we feel that what we’re doing is to mundane, etc. Am I right? So we reach for that figurative “Help” key and, more often than not, what happens? If we don’t give up entirely then we spot another ‘shiny object’, gravitate towards that, buy it and then focus on that…. for a time…. until something else comes along. Or perhaps we keep focused on our current goal, but we start to try doing other things in order to reach it, just becoming distracted and overwhelmed. Does any of this sound familiar? It’s certainly familiar to me! But I’ve managed to cleanse myself from the ‘shiny object’, WSO addiction. That way of doing things just doesn’t yield good results. If you want to spin your wheels and get nowhere fast then sure, it’s the way to go!

So sometimes we just need to take a step back and ask ourselves, “Am I really giving this my all? Is the product really at fault or am I allowing myself to be distracted or to procrastinate?” As I have said before, the methods I have been blogging about definitely work. No, they don’t currently give me massive results and no, I’m not receiving millions overnight, but then I don’t expect either of those scenarios. Rather, what I am seeing is that if I consistently apply these methods then I get the results. If I carry on consistently applying them I have no doubt that things will scale up and that my business will take off in the way that I want it to.

So stick at one or two things and do them well, rather than flitting from one thing to another and not really getting anything accomplished. Yes, CONSISTENCY is key and if you remain consistent then you will start to see the results.

The Golden Rule

consistency

Okay, so the closest thing I could find to represent a golden rule was a yellow tape measure! Oh well, do I get respect for trying? 😛

So then, what I want to highlight here is basically what it sounds like – the Golden Rule, or “treat others as you yourself would like to be treated”. Now, although I have made a couple of negative remarks about some of the behaviour I’ve witnessed on the Warrior Forum, on this occasion it is something else that has prompted this post.

Basically, I recently purchased a piece of software that hopefully will prove to be a useful tool for my business. Now, I noticed that a few affiliates were promoting this and each one was offering their own bonuses if you made the purchase through their link. So I chose a particular person, through whom I’ve purchased things before, made my purchase, sent a copy of my receipt as requested and……. nothing. So I waited for a couple of days until his next mailshot and in that e-mail he stated that all the bonuses had been sent out. Okay, I’d clearly been missed, for some reason. So I politely e-mailed him to ask for some assistance. Nothing. Not even an acknowledgement. A few days later I e-mailed again, this time to another of his e-mail addresses….. still nothing. So then I tried sending him a direct message on Twitter. Nope, that message was ignored too. Again I left it for a few days and e-mailed him again……. still nothing. Finally, I received another mailshot promoting another affiliate product and just found it too much to take to read his claims about being there for his subscribers, that he’s their friend, that he’ll do anything for them and if there’s any problem then all they had to do was e-mail him! So I sent him one last e-mail, explained that I would be unsubscribing from his list and that I would not be purchasing through any of his links again. Not that I got any reply….

Now, I hadn’t done anything wrong to this individual! For some unknown reason, I didn’t receive the promised bonuses and he just wasn’t prepared to so much as send me one message back to explain what the problem was. What annoys me is, not so much that I didn’t receive my bonuses, but that he promised something and didn’t deliver, he just ignored all my requests for help, he clearly feels that he can ignore his own ethos when it suits him and that I chose to purchase from him when, in hindsight, there are other people with whom I’ve been dealing for a long time and from whom I’d have rather have helped out by purchasing through their link.

So why am I telling you this? Although this experience annoyed me, that is not the reason for posting about it here. My reason is to emphasise an important point that’s VITAL for the survival of your business: apply the golden rule. If you promise something, then deliver. If it’s absolutely impossible to do so then let your customers know and the reasons why. Certainly don’t just ignore their requests for help. Don’t lie, don’t cheat and don’t treat your customers like idiots. Now all this may seem like common sense stuff, but there is an alarming number of people who seem to think that it’s okay to not deliver what they’ve advertised, to throw a hissy fit and start being abusive if a customer isn’t happy with what they’ve received, to be disrespectful and to belittle people if they have a difference of opinion or a legitimate concern and many, many more things.

If a ‘bricks and mortar’ business behaved in such a way then it would severely harm their reputation and, if not addressed and fixed, it could result in the business being short-lived, something that has been proven time and again. Your online business is no different. It is NOT a school playground, it is NOT a social media wall, it is NOT a street corner where you can just do back-handed deals and hard luck to anyone who doesn’t like it. This is your BUSINESS and you need to treat it as such.

Respect your visitors, subscribers and customers. Always deliver value. Always be honest and reliable. Always put the customer first, treating them how you would wish to be treated. Otherwise, you are headed for problems. On the other hand, look after your customers and they will look after you.

Updates

Well I pretty much covered my challenge updates in the first part of the post. I’m back to getting involved more on forums and blogs, striving to give value and it’s proving to be beneficial. I’ll be concentrating on getting myself well and truly back into it for the moment, but at the same time I’m considering trying something out in a few days. We’ll see how things go…

A couple of things I’ve added to my posts are the little ratings boxes that you can click on. Currently, they’re Albert Einstein, which made me chuckle so that’s why I picked those ones 😉 I can always change them to something else if necessary. But yes, please click away on them!

Also, I thought that some of you might like to hear about my latest blog posts ‘hot off the press’, so below here you’ll notice that there’s a box where you can input your e-mail so that you can receive updates as soon as my latest post is live. Your e-mail address is absolutely safe with me. I detest spam, illegal sharing of details and all that bad stuff, so I can assure you that you’ll never get any of that malarkey from me!

So when you’ve done with clicking on Mr Einstein, go ahead and get yourself on my priority updates list.

Thanks once again for everyone’s support, you rock! 😎

P. S. I’m about half way or so through creating my FREE beginners course! Although, I appear to have contracted a chest infection, so I’m coughing like mad which, of course, makes it difficult to create videos. Hopefully I’ll be back on track with that soon, but in the meantime I can get to work on the written part of it. Stay tuned….

  1. Hi Glenn. Another great post, as usual. I’ve been there when it comes to ordering
something and it’s not what I expected. I’ve also been ignored when trying to get a refund.
Basically, I just took it as a learning experience and unsubscribed from the affiliate’s mailing list who promoted the product. My days of buying WSO’s are over anyway.
    Have a good one,…Chris

    1. Hi Chris,

You and me both, brother! I’ve had more of these kind of experiences since writing this post. Just recently I’ve had a few things that I’ve bought just go offline without warning. It’s not that the sellers have stopped their business, they’ve just abandoned their products. This is wrong, end of story.

However, as I’ve come to realise and, as I often say to others, we can learn from these experiences and leverage them. We notice the shortcomings in other Marketers? Then we take note of those things, do our level best to be different and excel in those areas. We find ourselves ‘taken for a ride’? Then we view it as a learning experience and take care to be more cautious in future.

At the end of the day, I view it that the failings of those who cannot be bothered to care for their customers and clients only serves to be of benefit for those of use who do actually care and who value and will take care of people. It’s the honest, ethical Marketers who go above and beyond who end up getting the clients that the more careless have lost.

As for buying WSOs, well you know that you now have something that can yield fantastic results. What we have in iPro is light years ahead of anything I’ve seen in any WSOs so far. I, too, have broken free from the WSO addiction. That’s not to say that I don’t still buy stuff, as there are some very, very good and honest Marketers who put out some great stuff that I know I will learn from which, in turn, only serves to enhance what I’m already doing. Plus there are certain packages, tools, etc that are useful. But as for the ‘shiny objects’, nope – those days are gone!

    Hey Glenn,

I also can go back and forth when it comes to blogging and other income producing activity. When I’m on, I get good results, when I’m off, oooh I’m wayyy off LOL.

Consistency is definitely key! Having a good routine that you can tweak until it reach to perfection will definitely help you reap the rewards. If you can’t see the goal already in your mind, you’re going to slack off. But if you keep remind yourself and keep visualizing, you’ll definitely keep up the pace.

    Thanks for sharing!

    1. Hey Sherman,

Thanks for dropping by, my man 🙂

I like how you referred to visualising. I think that this is something that, although simple, is very powerful. It’s certainly something I haven’t been doing enough of, but over the last few days I’ve been working on it and I feel that it’s helping me to stay focused and motivated much better.

Thanks for your great comment 🙂

  3. Hi Glenn

This post is definetly as some others have said “spot on”. Consistency is certainly key to success online or off for that matter.

During my last 9 months my Dad died after both of parents had been taking into full time care. This was on the back of my dog who was almost 17 dying. I really dropped the ball and became very inconsistent. I paid the price. My blog rating with Alexa is still recovering.

I too have suffered the shiny objects disease. I am much more disciplined on that one now. To the point where I now miss important emails because I decided not to read anything 🙂

    A great message Glenn.

    Thanks

    1. Hi Sue,

Welcome to my blog and thanks so much for visiting and leaving a comment.

Firstly, please accept my sincere condolences regarding the loss of your dad and your dog. These things can knock us sideways as I know only too well. Just last year in May I lost my mum after a prolonged illness and had to put everything on hold to do with starting my Internet business. Since then I’ve had various problems and headaches to deal with, both with my health and in sorting out my mum’s estate. I had to pretty much start from scratch with my online efforts but my mentor, Dean Holland has been a lifesaver.

Although Alexa ratings can make interesting viewing, I’ve learned not to be too concerned about them given the fact that it’s not a true representation of what’s happening on your site. I never did find an explanation as to why my blog was so popular in Slovenia though….

Keep climbing, Sue and never allow life’s blows to knock you off course. Thanks so much again for stopping by 🙂

      Kind regards,
      Glenn

  4. Hey Glenn, I gotta tell ya…you are spot on! Basically everything you said in this post is
the absolute truth when it comes to online marketing. For some reason people tend not to take it seriously as if it’s not a “real” business. And I too have fallen victim to “shiny object syndrome”, I mean it’s not that hard when there’s so many new toys (wso’s) to play with nowadays…lol.

Anyway thanks for the wake up call my friend because I really need to get focused and be more consistent as well. Been trying out a few different things lately myself, but you know what I just recently realized…The stuff that Alex and Dean teaches flat out works! I just gotta stick with it and stay the course 🙂

    Thanks for the reminder…

    All the best,

    1. Hey Terry,

Nice to have you here again, thanks for your comment 🙂

I’m glad you found the post useful. I’ve been learning SO much over the last few months and it’s mostly been down to simply applying what I’ve been learning from Alex and Dean. I’ve definitely seen a direct relation between my results and how consistent I’ve been with taking the required action.

The whole aspect about people’s approach to their business is a particular bug-bear of mine. In fact, just general business ethics is something I place very high value on. I will certainly always speak out and never sugar-coat the subject, it’s too important.

Thanks again for your awesome comment, always happy to have you visit here 🙂

Hello Glenn, just wanted to say your blog is cool so I’ll subscribe.

Best regards from I. C. Daniel – Romania

    1. Hey Phil,

Thanks buddy. I haven’t changed the theme, no, but I am often tweaking and testing things, making subtle changes here and there. It’s all about testing to see what works, right?

So far I haven’t seen huge results through Love Claw but there have been a couple of clicks and ratings, so that’s good. Again, it’s a case of experimenting with a few things as I go along to see what gets results 🙂

  6. Neamat Tawadrous

    Hi Glenn,

Indeed, Consistency is the name of the game. Being consistent will yield consistent results. It’s possible to deviate from what’s working sometimes but it is always good to go back and keep doing what yields results and put the blinds on with regards to all those shiny objects. Oh boy, did I fall in that trap so many times! Of course, we need tweaking here and there sometimes for things to work better but what is important is to keep up and be consistent.

Regarding the Golden Rule and the story you mentioned. First I am sorry for what you have to go through with that Affiliate Marketer. But I have to say that’s why our industry has the stigma that it has around it. It’s because of these kind of marketers. It’s always better to under-promise and over-deliver but not the other way around. That’s what will get people to know, like and trust us and that’s the whole point of Attraction Marketing.

Thanks Glenn for such a great post. I’m sure it will help so many people to keep on track and be consistent.

    Be Blessed,

    Neamat

    1. Hi Neamat,

Thanks so much for dropping by and leaving your awesome comment!

Yep, under-promise and over-deliver, that’s definitely the way to go.

Thanks again, I appreciate your support very much 🙂

  7. Hi Glen

I would not have probably got round to it again had I not been away for a couple of days and took it with me determined to complete as I knew I would not be able to access the internet and I did complete just as we landed back!!!
I would more than recommend it, it is my second time going through it, first time didn’t get to the end! nearly this time all done and it does help you with your consistency and determination to be honest,

  8. Hi Glenn

Great post very true about consistency I just recently re read Think and Grow Rich and this has made me alter a few things also and be more consistent which is what does actually work.
Your news about the affiliate is quite common place, many times I have been in the same position in the past, but it is important to over deliver so those who are using these bad practices are hardly going to have a sustainable long term business as people will do as you did and I unsubscribe!.
Love the pictures by the way and old Albert very neat.

    1. Hey Sharon,

Thanks for stopping by, it’s much appreciated! 🙂 I have Think and Grow Rich but haven’t managed to get around to reading it, I do hear that it’s an essential read. I will get round to it, but for the moment I’m just trying to be very cautious about not taking in too much info at once and concentrate on my tasks at hand.

What I’ll probably do is load it up into my e-book reader once I’ve finished the book I’m currently reading and then read it at night when I go to bed. The only problem with that, though, is that it often takes me ages to get through a book that way because I end up falling asleep quickly! lol!

  9. Hey Jerry,

Thanks for your support as always 🙂 Yes you’re right, we absolutely can make a difference and show people how things are supposed to be done. I know that there are people out there who disagree and who would look at this approach and scorn it, saying that you need to be ruthless, spend lots of money, etc, but we can and will prove them wrong! People like Alex and Dean have already proven it themselves, we just need to throw our hats in the ring too and show people that the honest, ethical, value-giving way is best 🙂

    1. You’re absolutely correct my man. Honest and ethical and passionate about helping people is the recipe for long term success. It’s a shame when people preach what they will do for you (bonuses, etc.) and then don’t deliver on their promises. That strategy is definitely not going to fly in my book.

  10. Great update and feedback on your spending encounters. That is what separates the good marketers from the bad ones. I actually cover portions of that in my video course. It’s the sad truth as well as the realities of the online world.

The good news is that we can make a difference. We can show them exactly how it is suppose to be done. Keep it up mate and continue to be consistent and great things will come your way.
