“Tim Burton Made Me Late for Work”

headline“Now come on, Glenn! What’s the deal with the whacky headlines? Last week you were telling us that all search engines are soon to close down, this week you’re talking about Tim Burton!”

Well, yes, a good headline is important to pique curiosity and I shall talk about this some more as we go on.

But why the headline about Tim Burton?

Well, it’s actually genuine! It was the first line in a text (SMS) message that my brother sent me last week. It turns out that there’s a film being shot at the moment called, “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiars” and it’s being directed by Tim Burton.

Some of the film has been done in the town of Blackpool, where my brother lives and, due to filming been done on that day, the promenade was closed, there were no trams going to North Pier (near the train station) and the town centre was clogged with traffic. So, he ended up missing his train and being late for work.

So why am I telling you this?

Well, as soon as I saw that opening line to his message I thought of lesson to be learned number one: the importance of having a good headline, as I mentioned above.

headlineWhen I received the message and saw that first sentence, I was immediately hooked and just had to know what on earth my brother was talking about! He knew that it would get my attention and, in fact, commented on that very point in his next sentence.

The second lesson learned was to do with the way my brother reacted to the inconvenience. Normally, if we need to be somewhere by a particular time and there is a series of events that prevents us from doing so, it can be quite frustrating.

But clearly, my brother thought the whole thing was quite novel and amusing, especially as he’s a fan of Tim Burton. He felt compelled to tell me of the event and was clearly not too bothered by his delay. However, if it had been for a more mundane reason, I know that he would have been fuming!

So, lesson learned number two: in your business, be someone who stands out, who makes an impression and whom people like. Yes, you want people to know, like and trust you.

headlineFor example:

When you write a new blog post, do you readers think, “Ooh great, a new post!”?

When you send out an e-mail, are you one of the people who gets their e-mails open on the strength of who they are rather than just the subject line?

If you sell products or promote other people’s products, do people buy from you because it’s YOU rather than having to be sold on what the thing is and what it will do for them?

I only promote good quality stuff that I know can help you.

If you were to call up one of your prospects or customers, would they be overjoyed to hear from you?

I could go on, but hopefully you get my drift.

The thing is, if you’re on a number of mailing lists I’m sure that you get e-mail after e-mail and sales pitch after sales pitch. Sometimes it can get to the point where you think, “Oh no, not another message from that person…” or, “I’m getting sick of hearing about this product from all these different people”.

Or, if you get an unsolicited phone call from a telemarketer, you can feel quite inconvenienced or even annoyed.

But here’s the thing:

headlineYou want people to be glad to hear from you. Even if you do something that might usually irritate them, you want people to feel that, because it’s you, then it’s no problem. Perhaps they’ll even be excited to tell someone else about you, just like my brother was when he sent me the message about Tim Burton.

So, even though they have a lot to read and get through already, you want people to be eager to read your content.

Even though they may get a lot of e-mails, you want people to spot your name in the sea of noise and see what you have to say.

Although there are many ‘shiny objects‘ out there, you want your products to stand out as different and be something that can really help your customers.

In a nutshell, you want to get yourself to a position whereby your reputation precedes you.

Now, this doesn’t come overnight, but if you ensure that you are honest, ethical, approachable, always give value, always connect with your audience and give them stuff that will really help them, then you will be on your way to being someone who people will be more than happy to hear from.

And if you can throw an intriguing headline or two into the mix then even better! 😉

  1. Hey Glen,

It’s been a while since I was last on your blog, but I’m glad oli came today.

The for today is reputation. You definitely want to build a great reputation among your target market of people. What better way to get their curiosity going with a unique headline to start off.

Like the eyes are the windows to your soul, so in a,way is your headlines. You want to give your audience a clear understanding of what they can expect as long as it runs along their interest. If you’re consistent in doing this, then your reputation goes up.

With that said, each time the see your name, then they become excited and curious. At this rate it doesn’t get better than that! Thanks for the share Glen and you have a great upcoming weekend!

    1. Hi Sherman,

I’m glad you stopped by. To be quite honest, I think I’m probably well overdue a visit at yours also! I’ll make sure I rectify that ASAP.

Yes, reputation is most important. Once your name becomes synonymous with all the right things, you’ve cracked it and this is something that all should aim for.

Thanks for stopping by, Sherman, I’ll be along to your blog shortly. 🙂

  2. Hey Glenn,

I have to admit that I love what you share. You make it interesting and fun, great lessons for us all and I was wondering the same thing about the headline. What I’ve come to know about you though is that you don’t just use them to entice us over and then start sharing something entirely different.

You actually explain it or make it a lesson for us and to me that’s fun. I love the way you interact with us and you are proof that we look forward to what you share. We get excited about what you’ll post next because we know it will be worth our time.

Great lesson Glenn, thanks so much and I bet that was a really cool experience for your brother too. Even if he was late.

    1. Hi Adrienne,

Wow, what a great comment, thank you so much! Those words are really quite special coming from such an experienced blogger as yourself. 😀

The great thing about my brother’s experience that enabled me to apply it here was that he didn’t see any evidence of Tim Burton and the film crew being there apart from the fact that the town centre was being held up and he was made to be late. He didn’t actually witness anything to do with the filming itself. Yet, once he found out the reason for the hold up, it became something more of a novelty that he couldn’t wait to tell people! He couldn’t wait to tell me that Tim Burton had made him late for work – I mean, how often do you get to say that? lol!

Thanks again for your kind and encouraging words, Adrienne. It definitely reinforces to me that I must be doing something right! You have yourself a great rest-of-the-week. 🙂

  5. There’s more good stuff on this one blog page of yours, Glenn, than I can shake a stick at. Tasteful, in-context info boxes with robust calls to action; suggestions for further reading; author’s photo and signature for trust-building; a loop about further content that your readers will want to complete; a great story about writing good headlines that makes a point with good humor and has an intriguing headline of its own; a core lesson about standing out from the crowd; presentation of the principle of making people happy to hear from you; good story-telling, friendly illustrations, proper tagging, testimonials… I’ve run out of breath. A feller could learn a heckuva lot about blogging by following you, my man! Very warmest regards.

    1. Hi Phil,

Wow, thanks! I hadn’t realised there was so much in there! But then, it certainly didn’t happen overnight. I started from scratch as a total newbie, learned as I went (and I’m still learning), applied newly-learned strategies and generally tweaked and refined things as I grew. Now, most of it comes as second nature. But yes, when you break it down like you’ve done I suppose there is quite a lot in here!

It’s actually really helpful that you’ve analysed things the way you have, Phil. I have been tossing a few project ideas around in my head and you have actually helped me to sort through a lot of the mental chaff that was floating around. In just what way, well, that’s for another story, another day…. 😉

Thanks for stopping by, Phil. I do believe that this was your first visit – what took you so long, bro? lol 😛 I’m glad you came by and am very grateful for your great comment. I hope you have an awesome weekend, bud.

      1. I wasn’t worthy to visit your site until recently, Glenn. :^)
Actually, my blog is currently craptastic. So I’ve been lurking and not posting until I can whip it into shape.
You just do such an outstanding job that I couldn’t leave this time without a comment.
I think what you’ve done warrants my enthusiasm.
        Warmest regards!

        1. Well Phil, I must confess to feeling a bit overwhelmed – that’s so nice of you to say! I’ll have to make sure I keep that bar well and truly high now! 😉

I had forgotten, but I had actually visited your blog before. In all honesty, I don’t think that there is much that you need to whip into shape, I think it’s very good as it is. There are a couple of minor things I’d address, but apart from that you just need to make sure that you post regularly, engage with your readers and get out into the blogging world and connect with other bloggers by leaving valuable comments, etc.

If you want any tips and stuff or would like to throw some ideas around, you know that you’re more than welcome to give me a shout. I’d be happy to get on Skype or a Hangout and give any assistance I can. Just hit me up on Facebook if you ever want to do that, bud. 🙂
